My new 2020 series “Waiting for the Miracle” expresses an urgency to create and my reflections on current events during these unprecedented times. I see these hybrid drawings/paintings as visual poems capturing this moment of isolation, chaos, political divisions, the dramatic effects of global warming, and a renewed sense of our own mortality. As our world here in California became even more apocalyptic amidst a global pandemic with the strange yellow skies from wildfires, I realized that, after many years of depicting apocalyptic scenes in my work and visiting active volcanoes, I felt strangely familiar with this new surreal version of reality. It led me to contemplate even deeper the interconnectedness of humanity and nature. Our earth is forever changing, destroying, and growing simultaneously and we are along for the ride.

Despite this, the works remain optimistic offering color and light - suggesting something new and miraculous can emerge from darkness. The works evoke a wide spectrum of emotions, ranging from the more ominous “The Severed Garden” with its cracked obelisk and title referencing the poem by Jim Morrison, to the contemplative otherworldly “Reflections of the Universe,” featuring a volcano caldera containing the cosmos. Each piece features an organic jagged frame, suggesting we are gazing through a window into another world both ancient and current.

As an artist who travels for inspiration, my recent explorations of local geological sites and the Southern California landscape are apparent in the work including “Two Harbors” on Catalina Island, and the Palos Verdes coastline in “Waiting for the Sun”. In each piece there is a sense of movement and being on a journey - sometimes down a desert highway, sometimes towards whatever is looming on the horizon - with the outcome still hanging ambiguous in the air. In the words of Leonard Cohen, we are “Waiting for the Miracle”.
